William Nelson Moxley, 98, of Glen Rock and Ridgewood, NJ, passed away on July 10, 2019. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Irene in 2007, as well as his dear sister Carol Scherr. William is survived by his son Bruce Moxley and his wife Toni of Brick, NJ. He was the cherished grandfather of Christopher Moxley and his wife Rosanne, and Jeffrey Moxley.
Born Brooklyn NY November 23, 1920. His family moved to Glen Rock in 1922. He attended Glen Rock public schools and Ridgewood High School. He graduated Ridgewood High School in 1940. After graduation he began working for Wright Aeronautical Corporation in Paterson, NJ in the piston department. Wright Aeronautical became Curtiss Wright.
In 1943, Bill enlisted in the US Army where he held the rank of Technical Sergeant, 4th Grade in the Combat Engineers division. He did his basic training in Sea Girt, New Jersey and served in China, India, and Burma until 1945.
Upon his return to the states, he became reacquainted with Irene (Renee) Schmitt a woman he described as the most beautiful he’s ever seen. They were married, June 8. 1946 and moved to a home in Glen rock with their son Bruce. They later moved to Ridgewood, and then back to Glen rock when he retired. He remained in Glen rock after Renee’s passing in 2007. His final stop was in Spring Lake NJ last month.
Bill began working for the New York Curb Exchange which became the American Stock Exchange in 1945. He held positions as a Special Clerk and Market Maker from 1945-1951. During this time Bill severed on the Board of Directors for 2 terms. He left the American Stock Exchange in 1951 to join Canadian Arbitrage as a Floor Partner where he worked until 1956.
In 1956, Bill joined Shearson Hammill & Company. There he was responsible for floor operation and trading on the New York Stock Exchange, which included associations with Compliance, Research and Institutional Trading departments as well as coordinating with the back and branch office systems. Bill was a member of the New York Stock Exchange from 1961 until his retirement in June of 1988. He was given the privilege of ringing the closing bell at the exchange on his last day with his wife, son and grandsons looking on.
After retirement, Bill embarked on a number of endeavors. He served as President of the Van Saun Zoological Society for 2 years. He was on the Executive Committee/Board of Trustees of the Aviation Hall of Fame and Museum at Teterboro Airport and served as President for 5 years. He was a member of the Board of Arbitration for the New York Stock Exchange. He was also on the Business and Tourism Board to establish a Convention and Visitor’s Bureau in the Meadowlands area. He also worked with U.S. Air Force personnel as an advisor on locations for their various New York area meetings and luncheons.
Bill had a passion for travel and frequently went on trips to Europe, the islands, and in the states with Renee, his son Bruce and on own well into his 90’s. He relished the good things in life including music, art, food, friends and family. There is a legion of people who considered Bill a friend and has maintain relationships for decades going back to schoolmates.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday at 9:30 AM at the Chapel of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel RC Church, 1 Passaic Street, Ridgewood. Interment to follow at Maryrest Cemetery, Mahwah. Visiting Tuesday 4:00-8:00 PM at the Feeney Funeral Home, 232 Franklin Avenue, Ridgewood. In lieu of flowers donations to the Bob Woodruff Family Foundation
