On Sunday, January 10, 2021, Thomas Burgin loving husband and father of 4 passed away at the age of 86.
Thomas was born on March 8, 1934 in Mineola, New York, beloved son of William T. Burgin and Pauline Savage Burgin. He grew up in Larchmont, NY and graduated from Mamaroneck High School where he was president of the National Thespian Society. He earned a BS degree in Business Administration from Lehigh University in 1956 where he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity, Business Manager of the Yearbook and a member of the Pershing Rifles.
He served as a 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Army from 1956 – 1957.
On May 3, 1958 he married Mary Alice (Lolly) Penick and they moved to Ridgewood and raised 4 girls, Laura, Gail, Christine and Amy.
Tom worked in sales for the Vanadium Corporation and S.B. Penick & Company before transitioning to the Ridgewood Board of Education in 1971 where he was the Business Administrator for 25 years. After he retired from the Board of Ed, he was the Chief Financial Officer at Children’s Aid and Family Services for 7 years.
He was active in the Lions Club, on the board of the Hermitage, on the Vestry at both Christ Church in Ridgewood and St. Paul’s in Paterson. He recorded news for the blind, tutored children for Children’s Aid and was a lay reader for many years.
Tom spent much time in the Berkshires where he and Lolly had a second home for 40 years. He enjoyed tennis, hiking, kayaking and waterskiing. He loved family trips to Amelia Island, the Outer Banks, Utah and the Delaware shore. He had many wonderful trips with Lolly to Hawaii, Paris, London, Greece and Spain. His love for his Jack Russell terriers past and present was well known, Tucker, Ziggy and his current dog, Daffy.
Thomas was preceded in death by his mother, Pauline and father, William. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Lolly, his four children, Laura Bougas (Charles), Gail Schoch (Philip), Christine Sinkhorn (Steven) and Amy Walsh (Luke), his twin brother William T. Burgin (Tricia) and his 9 grandchildren - Christopher, Alison, Robert, Corinne, Erin, Tyler, Timothy, William and Ronan.
A private family service will be held at Feeney Funeral Home in Ridgewood on Saturday, January 16, 2021. A memorial service in celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
