Roberts, Richard H., age 71, of Ridgewood, passed away December 20, 2017. Beloved husband of Betty Ann (NEE: DeRosa) for 47 years. Loving father of Sean Roberts of Bayonne; Garrett and wife Laura Roberts of Warren. Devoted brother of Eileen and husband Thomas McGrail of Flushing and Gerard Roberts, also of Flushing, NY. Adoring grandfather of Addison Elizabeth Roberts, Luke Antonio Roberts and Ella Bettina Roberts. A parishioner of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel RC Church in Ridgewood, he coached his son’s youth baseball and basketball teams in Ridgewood and never ever missed a game. “Richie” spent 33 years with the New York City Department of Probation, first as head of the Field Services Unit, then as Associate Commissioner. Undoubtedly, one of the most respected and beloved officers to ever wear the badge. He graduated from St. John’s University (where he also met his wife) with a B.B.A. in economics and management, and earned his Masters from John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Richard loved the Brooklyn Dodgers, the Mets, the NY Football Giants, British Mysteries on TV, and reading a good book. Most importantly, he was always willing to offer a kind word of encouragement and was constantly relied upon for advice from those who loved him most. This world is now emptier without his kindness, but Heaven is now that much fuller. He will be missed more than he could possibly ever know.
