Joan Margaret Burrows

Joan Margaret (Popp) Burrows, 91, of Hawthorne, died peacefully at home on November 8, 2023.
Devoted mother to three children; Thomas J. Burrows of Brooklyn NY, Jacquelyn M. Burrows of Hawthorne NJ and Edward C. Burrows and his wife, Tracey Orth Burrows of Hawthorne NJ; grandmother of Phillip Edward Burrows and great grandmother to Brayden Joseph Burrows of Berkeley Heights NJ. Joan was predeceased by her two sisters, Evelyn David and Georgia Shiflett. She will be greatly missed by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Joan was born in Prospect Park NJ to Ida and George Popp on June 17, 1932. Her father was a veteran of World War I and active in the American Legion. Her family survived the Great Depression and Joan was a “Poppy Girl” during World War II. She attended Prospect Park School No. 1 and Hawthorne High School graduating in 1949.
After high school Joan worked for New Jersey Bell and ATT. She resided in the Preakness area of Wayne and in Hawthorne NJ and after raising her family worked at Koppel Color Company, Alexander Hamilton Savings & Loan and Bell Atlantic. One of Joan’s favorite pastimes was completing at least two crossword puzzles a day and she was a collector of hippopotamus items. Joan was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Paterson NJ and then a member of the West Side Presbyterian Church in Ridgewood NJ. Joan was also a proud union member of local 827 IBEW.
Joan asked that there be no service and that we just party. The cremation was handled privately through Feeney Funeral Home. The family plans to have a remembrance party with family and friends in early 2024.
