Evelyn Ambrose Steiner

December 5, 1937 ~ July 28, 2022 (age 84) 84 Years Old

Tribute

Evelyn “Junie” Ambrose Steiner, age 84, of Encino, CA, formerly a 36-year resident of Ridgewood, NJ, passed away at home on July 28, 2022.  She was born in Baltimore, MD on December 5, 1937, a daughter of the late Homer Knowles Ambrose, Sr. and Evelyn Grace Fogle Ambrose.

Talking, storytelling, and taking care of others were very important parts of Evelyn’s life.  She was a gentle soul who made friends wherever she went, connected with others instantly and shared her wonderful sense of humor. Everyone she met loved her.  Family was everything to her – those born into the family and those who were family by choice.

Evelyn graduated from Mt. St. Agnes high school in 1955.  She earned her BS in Nursing at Mt. St. Agnes College in 1959, which has since merged with Loyola University in Baltimore.  After college, she worked at Bon Secours Hospital in Baltimore as a newborn and premature nurse.  She dedicated this part of her life to caring for new lives that needed her tender loving touch. Evelyn also helped care for her grandmother at her home while she was ill.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Kay Ambrose and Homer Knowles Ambrose, Jr, and her husband of 43 years, Ivan Bernard Steiner in 2012.

When Evelyn started her family with Ivan, she dedicated her life to raising their children.  She was incredibly caring and always put the needs of others first.  Evelyn gave love and support to not only her children, but also their friends.  She was everyone’s “mom.” Volunteering at her children’s schools and being active in the Catholic church were passions of hers.  Evelyn loved surprising her children and grandchildren with letters, cards, and small gifts in the mail.  She was very proud of the four strong and independent children that she raised.

Those left to mourn Evelyn include: her children, David (Mary Claire) Steiner, of Lodi, NJ, Andrew (Jennifer) Steiner, of Belton, SC, Matthew (Theresa) Steiner, of Encino, CA, and June (Colin) Mitchell, of Bolton, MA; grandchildren, who lovingly called her Mi-Ma, Kira Ann Grace Steiner, Eli Steiner, Betty Steiner, Chloe Evelyn Mitchell, Renee Elizabeth Mitchell and Olivia Grace Mitchell; many nieces, nephews, godchildren, friends, and her loving and dedicated caregivers.

In Evelyn’s younger years, she loved spending time in Ocean City, MD on the beach.  Her friends remember her as being so much fun, always happy and could make people feel better in sad times.  Her smile would light up a room when she entered.  Evelyn always loved flowers, reading and spending time with family.  Remember Evelyn enjoying the beach, gathering with family, getting lost in a good book, or admiring the flowers.  We can still hear her infectious laughter.  That is how Evelyn would want to be remembered.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Francis of Assisi, 3615 Harford Rd., Baltimore, MD 21218.  Please make any donations in memory of Evelyn Ambrose Steiner to the “unrestricted endowment.”
