Charles Gerald Shepherd, 86, died on January 7, 2020, in Saddle River New Jersey.  Dr. Shepherd was born on November 12, 1933 in Dardanelle, Arkansas to the late Gerald T. Shepherd and Mildred O'Neal Shepherd.  He was happily married to his loving wife, Betty Dickert Shepherd, for over 62 1/2 years.  At the time of his death, he was a resident of The Bristal Assisted Living at Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey. He received his bachelor's, master's and Ph.D. degrees from Louisiana State University, serving on the L.S.U. faculty for over ten years and the faculty of Mississippi State University for over 25 years.  He directed the agricultural research program of Mississippi State at the Delta Branch Experiment Station in Stoneville, Mississippi,  and then served as the director of the Southern Regional Aquaculture Center in Stoneville until his retirement.  He was an active member of the Rotary Club and a parishioner at United Methodist, Presbyterian and Episcopal Churches in Mississippi, Arkansas and North Carolina.  He was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing golf with his sons and watching golf tournaments and his beloved L.S.U. Tigers play football.  He is survived by his wife, Betty, his sons Gerald (and his wife Lori), of New York City, and Charles (and his wife Anne), of Austin, Texas, and six grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Shirley Grimes of Foley, Alabama. A memorial service will be held at a later date. The family asks that in lieu of flowers contributions be made to The Washington Crossing Foundation, P.O. Box 500, Bristol, PA 19907, which will award a scholarship in Dr. Shepherd’s memory.
