Betty D. Shepherd, 87, died on May 12, 2022, her birthday, in Hackensack, New Jersey. Mrs. Shepherd was born on May 12, 1935 in Oregon City, Oregon. Her father, Commander D. C. Dickert, was an officer in the Coast Guard, and she grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana and other cities where Commander Dickert was stationed. She was happily married to her loving husband, the late Charles Gerald Shepherd, for over 62 ½ years, beginning on the day that they graduated from Louisiana State University. Mrs. Shepherd was a loyal and loving wife, mother and grandmother, raising her two sons in Louisiana and Mississippi. She was a parishioner at United Methodist, Presbyterian and Episcopal Churches in Mississippi, Arkansas and North Carolina. She enjoyed playing golf with her husband and sons and watching golf and her beloved L.S.U. Tigers play football. She is survived by her sons Gerald (and his wife Lori), of New York City, and Charles (and his wife Anne), of Austin, Texas, and six grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Shirley Grimes of Foley, Alabama. A memorial service will be held at a later date. The family asks that in lieu of flowers contributions be made to The Washington Crossing Foundation, P.O. Box 500, Bristol, PA 19007, which will award a scholarship in Mrs. Shepherd’s memory.
